5 Life Hacks Every Homeowner In Needs To Know

October 22, 2026
, : Here are 5 life hacks most companies don’t want you to know. This is because if enough people know these tips, a lot of companies will not make as much money. Here are the 5 life hacks:
1. How To Instantly End Any Sales Pitch

Sometimes not answering your door isn’t enough. A salesman can catch you outside your home, walking through Costco/Sam’s, or at a mall kiosk. My good friend is a career salesman and gave me a tip that almost always ends his best sales pitch.
Here is an example of how I recently used this tip:
Me: (Minding my own business walking through Costco)
Random AT&T Salesman: “Hey how’s it going?”
Me: (Squinting my eyes looking at the logo on his shirt) “It’s great. Thanks, but I work for Verizon. Sorry and good luck to you.”
Random AT&T Salesman: “I can’t beat that. Thanks and have a good day.”
The sales pitch was over before it began. The key here is to look at whatever logo you can find (on shirts, cars, booths, etc.) and give them a line about you working for a competitor. I’ve used this on all the door-to-door salesmen, in-store salesmen, etc. who approach me.
2. How To To Avoid Taxes
We recently moved to . Halfway through hanging the second painting in our new home, I wanted to give up on life. A simple task like hanging paintings should not be so frustrating. My father-in-law noticed my frustration and showed me a tip that changed everything. I found a video below that shows you this simple but useful trick.
3. How To Avoid Taxes
If you own a house and hope to pass it to your kids one day, the video below will help your kids save tons of money on taxes.
4. How To Have an Abnormal Amount of Fun With Junk Mail

I get lots of junk mail delivered to my home. It’s frustrating because, unlike email, you cannot unsubscribe. I once called a company and asked them to stop sending me mail; they said “okay”, yet continued to send mail. One day I got an abnormal amount of junk mail and decided to spice things up. Here is what I did:
- For a few businesses (including the one I asked to stop mailing me) I ripped up their offer forms, placed them in their business reply envelope, and sent it back.
- I took the Discover card offer form and sent it to Capital One and vice versa.
- I took the AT&T form and sent it to T-Mobile and vice versa.
Why Did I do this?
- The companies get charged for the return mail.
- After doing this a few times, I stopped receiving junk mail from some companies.
- It helped fund my local post office (I love our mailwomen).
- This was abnormally fun. I would sometimes chuckle on my way to the mailbox.
5. How To Upgrade Your AC Unit Without Spending a Fortune
When it comes to referrals, home service contractors (plumbers, electricians, ac repairmen, etc.) and doctors work the same. For example, if you went to your primary care doctor because you have an issue with your eye, your primary care doctor may refer you to an eye specialist. The same goes for home service contractors. If you call an ac repairman out and they recognize part of your issue is electrical, they will refer an electrician.
Here is something most people don’t know. Some home service contractors may treat referrals differently. They do this because if a client is referred to them, they want to provide as much value as possible so they keep receiving referrals.
Here is how I learned this. Recently I wanted to upgrade my ac unit. I met with 3 companies. They all did the same thing: Came out to my house, looked at my unit, and gave me a quote. Nothing special. One day I struck up a conversation with a man who I always see walking his dog. His name was Bill, and he owns a well-known plumbing company. I made small talk about my recent experience with the ac unit companies, and that’s when he told me:
I thought this was a well-known tip until my buddy, who was a mechanic for 30+ years had not seen it before. Open your cable tie packets in the middle, and you will never spill them all over the floor again. Pull out however many you need from the center as seen in the image above.
“I Will Send You a Referral Link. Book an Appointment With This Referral Link & You Will Get a Deal You Will Not Find Anywhere Else In ”
-Bill S.
He sent me the link, I booked the ac unit estimate and d*mn….Bill was right. Here is what I was offered when I booked through Bill’s link:
- You get a full year of one of these streaming services: Netflix, Disney, ESPN+, Apple TV, Apple Music, Spotify, or Discovery Plus.
- They upgrade your home with a smart thermostat for free. These things are fancy; they help you save money and allow you to control your home’s temperature from your cell phone.
- Depending on the unit you get, you may qualify for a Residential Energy Tax Credit. Most people don’t know this. They will fill out the tax form for you and send it to you. All you have to do is sign and submit it to your tax processor.
- They give you a one-hour waiting window as opposed to a 3-5 hour waiting window.
- If they are late, you get a dollar of your service for every minute they are late. So if they are 30 minutes late, you get $30 off.
- If you need financing, they fill everything out for you. The process takes 5 minutes.
- Their units cost anywhere from $7-$20K depending on the size of your home, your insulation, and how energy efficient your windows are but they give you anywhere from $2-$4K off on average.
The previous 3 companies offered nothing even close to all this. Here is what I also loved. Bill said he has been using this company for as long as he can remember because he can trust his customers with them, they are affordable, and they do quality work. His customers thank him for referring the ac company. This makes Bill’s company look good, so when he discovers a customer needs an ac unit upgrade, he keeps referring this ac company. If you need home service work, if possible, try to go through a referral program. It saves time and money.
(UPDATE: October 22, 2026): A lot of you asked about the ac company. After talking with Bill, he allowed me to post his referral link. The ac company is called Mr. Reliable Heating & Air.
